Industry Standards for Printing and Book Production
At Print Nation, we are committed to producing high-quality books and printed products. However, due to the nature of the printing and binding process, certain characteristics are considered industry standard and should be expected as part of the production process. These minor imperfections do not affect the functionality or overall quality of the final product.
Foil Application Standards
Foil stamping is a meticulous process that involves applying heat and pressure to transfer foil onto the surface of the book. While we strive for perfection, certain characteristics are inherent to the process and considered normal:
- Light Scuff Marks: Small scuff marks may appear on the foil surface. These are inherent to the application process and do not detract from the overall appearance.
- Speckles Missing from Intended Areas: Occasionally, a speckle or two of foil may be missing from the intended space. This is a normal outcome of foil application and does not affect the design’s integrity.
- Shimmer Effect: Foil may exhibit a natural shimmer or slight reflective inconsistencies, which are considered part of its visual appeal.
- Alignment Variations:
Foil is registered to the artwork but can have up to a 1/8″ shift in position due to the nature of the multi-step process. Foil is applied after the base artwork is printed and laminated. The change in stock thickness caused by lamination and the need to run the laminated cover back through the printer to apply toner for foil can result in slight alignment shifts.
Design Recommendation: To avoid alignment issues, we do not recommend combining print and foil elements that rely on precise alignment. Allow for flexibility in your design to ensure the best possible outcome.
Casing-In Process for Hardcover Books
The casing-in process, which involves attaching the book block to the hardcover case, can result in slight variations that are standard in the industry:
- End Sheet Placement: The space between the edge of the end sheets and the edge of the case may not be perfectly equal on all sides. This is standard and does not affect the book’s functionality.
- Case Alignment: Cases may not always be perfectly centered. The front and back covers may appear slightly offset, and the spine may have a minor angle. These variations are normal and should be expected.
General Expectations for Books
Both hardcover and softcover books are produced using a combination of manual and automated processes. While we strive for precision, some minor imperfections should be anticipated, including:
- Spine Text Placement: We strive to ensure that text on the spine is perfectly placed for both hardcover and softcover books. However, due to the printing and binding processes, the text may not always be perfectly centered. Slight shifts in alignment are normal and should be expected. These variations do not affect the book’s usability or overall appearance.
- Slight shifts in alignment or placement of the book block within the case for hardcover books.
- Variations in color, ink density, or registration, especially for multi-color designs.
- Minor handling marks on covers or pages, which do not affect usability.
This Is Not an Exhaustive List
